How to Use the Trail

The Great Redwood Trail is for everyone, ranging from day hikers and horseback riders to bike-packers and backpackers.

GRTA Walk and Wheelchair

Pedestrians and Hikers

can use the trail for short walks or long-distance backpacking trips, including those using mobility devices or camping along the route.

GRTA Kayak Icon

Equestrians

can enjoy the trail during day rides, hiking while supported by livestock, or equestrian multi-day camping trips. In areas with high demand, equestrian users may have separate facilities from other users for safety and comfort.

GRTA Bike Icon

Cyclists

can ride conventional bikes and e-bikes along the GRT for recreation or transportation needs. Gravel and mountain bikers, bike-packers, and touring cyclists can explore the trail with the possibility to camp along the way.

River Users

can take kayaks, canoes, and rafts connecting from the trail. Both day-use leisure trips with whitewater options and multi-day camp trips are possible.
