McNab Creek Restoration

In mid-October of this year, a neighboring landowner to the GRTA line discovered that a 10-foot diameter culvert had been crushed last winter, with thousands of yards of sediment washed downstream. McNab Creek is a tributary to the Russian River, just north of Hopland, in Mendocino County.

We jumped into high gear, hiring a local contractor to remove the culvert (which was a barrier to upstream anadromous fish passage and habitat) as well as over 2000 cubic yards of material that was instream and upslope. We partnered with adjacent landowners, the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, the California State Water Resources Control Board, and the Army Corps of Engineers to complete this critical restoration project.

The Great Redwood Trail project offers so many restoration opportunities, which will benefit our fisheries and wildlife. It’s not just a great trail- it’s also an opportunity for healing and reconnecting tributaries to rivers, and people to land.
